Everything You Need to Know About the Destin Cobia Tournament
| Friday, December 28, 2018

People fishing from a boat during the Destin Cobia Tournament

The Destin Cobia Tournament draws hundreds of anglers to the HarborWalk Marina in Destin each year. This month-long event challenges anglers to catch the best cobia these waters have to offer. Whether you want to enter the tournament or just watch, stay at one of our vacation rentals along scenic 30A situated close to the marina and other gems along the way! Be sure to download our free Vacation Guide to learn more and start planning your trip today!

Your Guide to Enjoying the Destin Cobia Tournament During Your Stay Along 30A

The Tournament’s Process

Once participants have registered themselves and their boat in March, the event begins. However, this contest is officially set off by the first cobia to be caught and weighed by a registered boat. This then drives a month-long competition of casting lines and reeling them in, pursuing the biggest cobia around and the sizeable cash prizes.

How Did the Tournament Get Its Name?

The tournament is named after one of the premier fish of the Gulf, the cobia. It has all the trappings of the perfect fish for sport and recreational fishing because they put up a fight, are massive in size (up to 82 pounds!) and have a photo-worthy bronze and white striped body. It’s also rare because it’s the only member of the Rachycentron canadum species. This is all not to mention that it’s also perfect for filleting and cooking. In fact, it’s considered a “Best Choice” fish when caught in the tournament’s waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

What to See and Do on the Marina

The Harborwalk Marina in Destin is full of shopping, eating, and oceanic sights for those attending the tournament or visiting during that month. Spectators can watch the cobia weigh-ins on the harbor and see tons of angler boats speckled throughout the surrounding water.

The Scenic Route to Destin Along 30A

Beyond the sights of fishing boats and oceans, the route to the marina along 30A is a sight to see in itself. Our many rentals along scenic highway 30A vary in distance from the marina. So, hop in the car and behold pure, white sand beaches, and a host of blue hues to relax you on your drive to the Destin Cobia Tournament.

(Participating anglers can fish from Panama City to Orange Beach in search of the best cobia, but the main weigh station is in Destin.)

This Is Why Eden Gardens State Park Is the Perfect Outdoor Oasis
| Wednesday, December 5, 2018

The Wesley House at Eden Gardens State Park

The Sunshine State is all about the outdoor lifestyle. With warm, summery weather year round, it’s rare that you’ll feel the urge to remain inside. Break free from the confining walls of the indoors by making Eden Gardens State Park part of your itinerary during your stay at Royal Destinations. This natural oasis is the ideal location for taking advantage of the awesome Florida weather and will leave you searching for even more outdoor fun. However, you won’t have to look very far when you download our free Vacation Guide. Here, you’ll find all of the best attractions, restaurants, and events to continue your escape in the sun.

Find a Slice of Heaven at Eden Gardens State Park

Four Park Programs

The Junior Ranger Program and the Outsiders Club are educational, active programs for kids. After signing up, participants have the opportunity to get trained in fun outdoor activities like camping, fishing, hiking, or kayaking. If you download a Junior Ranger Passport, you can get stamps for completing challenges at every Florida state park and work your way to becoming an honorary Ranger!

Additionally, the Park offers adventurous programs for all age groups. For instance, the Manatee Educational program leads visitors to a picturesque natural spring located on the grounds. Here, gentle West Indian manatees glide through the sparkling waters. Learn more as your designated guide explains how the location is a home for injured manatees and provides insights on how to protect these gentle giants.

The park also offers an Operation Recreation GeoTour, which is a program reminiscent of a scavenger hunt. Simply sign up online to track down clues scattered throughout the park that eventually lead you to a secret treasure! It’s a unique way to explore the scenery while brushing up on your navigational skills.

Three Unique Experiences

Eden Gardens provides you with a wide variety of experiences and amenities, beginning with tours of the Wesley House. This large, white structure with two-story columns sends you back in time to an era of elegance. Within, you’ll find the original owner’s heirlooms and antiques, which showcase more of Florida’s history.

Near the house is a hiking trail for you to traverse. If you’re staying in one of our pet-friendly properties, you’ll find that this is a great location for a stroll with your furry friend. Take a journey through ethereal ornamental gardens and past a scenic kayak launch that looks out at the Choctawhatchee Bay.

Since the kayak launch is on the bay, it’s the ideal location for an afternoon of fishing. Grab a rod and see if you can catch local fish like redfish, grouper, or flounder! It’s a relaxing way to enjoy the Florida sun.

Two Ways to Camp

While you can find some awesome nightlife in 30A, it pales in comparison to an evening under the stars. Experienced campers and curious beginners will be happy to discover two options for camping in Eden Gardens State Park. The grounds contain full-facility campsites complete with grills, showers, and fire rings, as well as locations with more primitive surroundings and fewer amenities for a secluded excursion.

The park also gives visitors the option to rent a cabin. Nestled away in the natural surroundings, you’ll get the feel of camping with the luxury of a private, non-communal space.

One Fantastic Stay with Royal Destinations!

After exploring the area and experiencing our scenic suites, you’ll fall in love with 30A. From beachside cottages with views of the Gulf to rentals with private pools, there’s something for everyone. Our amenities and central location encourage you to get out and enjoy the stunning Sunshine State. Book today to begin your ideal outdoor adventure!

What You Need to Know About Grayton Beach Snorkeling

About the Reef

The South Walton Artifical Reef Association’s mission is to create sustainable habitats for marine life while offering extraordinary recreation opportunities for visitors. In 2015, they put their plan into action by establishing the Grayton Beach snorkeling reef. This underwater destination is just offshore from Grayton Beach State Park, allowing you to reach it via swimming or paddling. If you map out each reef structure from an aerial view, it’s actually in the shape of a sea turtle!

The reef has already become a popular home for sea life, and over 80 species have been sighted there so far. And, the South Walton Artificial Reef Association has created a total of four snorkeling reefs in the area, so you’re free to get out into the water and explore the wonders at each one. You can even scuba dive at the Underwater Museum of Art by Grayton Beach as well!

The Best Way to Explore It

If you’d like to check out the Turtle Reef at Grayton Beach, look no further than our partners at Rent Gear Here. They make the experience simple and fun with their Grayton Beach reef snorkel tours. Tours run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and expert guides will be there every step of the way.

They start by explaining everything you need to know and providing the necessary equipment, and then you’re invited to hop on a paddle board and hit the water. Once out there, it’s time to explore! You’ll see a variety of fish, corals, sponges, plants, and more. By the time you’re back on shore, you will have plenty of wonderful memories to look back on!
